Sonic the Hedgehog

In a rare turn of events, a studio finally listened to the initial reactions of the fans after the first trailer was dropped and actually delayed a film until they fixed the problem, and the end result was fantastic. From the moment the first trailer dropped, fans everywhere were voicing their displeasure at the style that the studio decided to take with Sonic. They went for a more realistic, rodent-like style that was the stuff of nightmares. It was an absolute disaster. After weeks of complaints, the studio made an announcement that they would redo the look of Sonic and delay the film a couple of months, and that might have been the decision that saved this film from what could have been an astronomical flop in the box office. The film went from impending doom to being one of the highest grossing video game films of all time.

The film itself is okay. It is not a fantastic film by any stretch, but it is a fun film that definitely warrants a watch, especially if you are a fan of the character. Nostalgia plays a big part in this film for the older audience, while the jokes and bright colors appeal to the younger fanbase who might not be as familiar with the character. Ben Schwartz does a great job voicing the character and really gives Sonic a lot of charm, wit, innocence, and wackiness. James Marsden does a good job bouncing jokes off of Schwartz and throughout the film you really grow to enjoy the parental relationship between him and Sonic. The acting itself is pretty solid by all of the main cast, but they are all overshadowed by none other than Jim Carrey. This is possibly his best performance since his prime days when he was releasing nonstop great comedies. He is over the top in his typical Jim Carrey way and steals every scene that he is in. I was skeptical when I first heard he was cast as Robotnik, but now I just cannot picture anyone else in that role. Robotnik is the type of smart, sarcastic, and zany character that Carrey thrives in. Kids will be able to enjoy this film because it has plenty of jokes and fast movement, as well as some awesome action sequences, meanwhile the older generation will be able to enjoy it because of the nostalgia it brings, and also because there is one super cool Quicksilver style slow-motion scene that is great.

This film follows a basic premise that most kid’s films follow. There is a clear and adorable protagonist, his friendly ally, and a clear goal with a clear antagonist in the way. What helps this film reach a deeper meaning is the relationship between Sonic and Marsden’s character. You can see the respect and admiration that Sonic has for him and as the film goes on you can see the parental instinct grow in Marsden and the comradery build between the characters. It has a great message of keeping your heart open to new friends and experiences. The film also ends with a great and heartfelt scene, as well as a post-credits scene that ultimately sets up this franchise for a sequel, which is a welcome sign considering how well this one turned out. The studio decided to listen to the fans and give them what they want, and it ended up paying off in a big way. Sonic is now set up for future generations. Official Rating: 3 Stars.
