World War Z

Ah, the film that has absolutely nothing to do with the book except maybe the plot and will probably forever be recognized as the zombie film with Brad Pitt in it. While this is not a great film by traditional film standards, it is honestly not that bad by zombie film standards, but the bar for those films is pretty low in this generation. World War Z suffers from what several films within this genre suffer from, and that is lack of depth. Outside of the lead being played by Brad Pitt, the rest of the characters are absolutely dull, and even Brad Pitt is not all that great here. He is emotionless, but that is the way his character was written. This film suffers greatly from that.

This film resembles nothing from the book, which is only a problem to fans of the book, but where it affects the film is that a screenplay needs to be written from scratch with nothing other than an idea, and the trio in charge just did not do a good job. The screenplay offers nothing. Characters are written for the sake of being exposition, Brad Pitt is not given a chance to shine, his family offers nothing of value outside of just motivation, and with their wooden characters, we as an audience are given little reason to care. This film struggles, but it is not without its moments. The action on display is absolutely insane. One thing I truly love about this film is the zombies. They are fast, angry, aggressive, and the hordes are absolutely what you expect a horde of zombies to be. Watching them trample each other and climb on each other to reach greater destinations is quite the spectacle. The cinematography is also noteworthy in this film. It is shot beautifully, and you can tell it was an emphasis to the director. Ben Seresin does a great job. Director Marc Forster does a fair job at managing this film. He keeps the film at a solid pace and never allows you too much room for boredom, which in a zombie film, is essential. The action is what sells this film. Not to mention the great song from Muse that they used.

This film is average by traditional standards, but it works well as a horror-action flick, and that is what most people are looking for when they watch it. After all, it made over half of a billion dollars, so clearly it can be considered a success having doubled its budget. You can go ahead and grab some popcorn, your favorite drink, some candy, and get ready to watch zombie heads blown in. Are you going to remember this film years down the line? I doubt it. Are you going to be decently entertained while you watch it? Probably. Official Rating: 3 Stars.
