Top 25 Most Anticipated Movies of 2019
What’s in store for 2019? I’ve taken a look at almost
every upcoming release I could find to see what should excite us for this year.
Now, with so much coming up, there was no way I was going to narrow this down
to just ten films, so we’re saying screw it and just going for twenty-five! Let’s
get started.
25. Pokémon Detective Pikachu
Upon first glance this doesn’t look like much, and I
will say that it is a bit odd to hear Ryan Reynolds voicing Pikachu, but if we
have learned anything from Ryan Reynolds’ career it’s that he gives amazing
performances when he’s passionate about a project. His recent showings as the
fun merc with a mouth have proven that. But, let’s be honest here, we’re interested
in this to see how they handle the live action adaptations of the beloved Pokémon
that we grew up with, and if this hits the mark in terms of success, it could
be the right first step towards giving us a Pokémon cinematic universe. Who
could hate that?
24. Godzilla: King of the Monsters
The monsterverse continues and damn am I excited to
see Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah on the big screen in today’s world with
the better effects we have. This has been a long time coming and while the
first Godzilla wasn’t amazing, it was
still incredibly solid, and I can’t wait to see these monsters, or titans, as
we’re calling them now, kick some serious butt. Oh, and it features a great
cast of Millie Bobby Brown, Vera Farmiga, and the incredibly talented Sally Hawkins.
Should be quite a ride.
23. Pet Sematary
I have long been wanting more of King’s novels to get remade.
I have always loved the idea of doing a Stephen King multiverse, much in the
way the books play out, and although that isn’t exactly what we’re getting, it
still is nice to see King’s works again on the big screen. Plus, this is one of
his best novels, and Jason Clarke, who is known for leading roles in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and Everest is in this, so that’s awesome.
22. The Kid
Vincent D’Onofrio will be directing this tale of a
young boy who witnesses the encounter between Billy the Kid and Sheriff Pat Garrett.
Not much is known about this, but a western revolving around Billy the Kid with
a cast that features D’Onofrio, Chris Pratt, and Dane DeHaan? Count me in.
21. Knives Out
Rian Johnson is back behind the camera after his
controversial Star Wars: The Last Jedi
and honestly, his next picture looks promising. Say what you want about The Last
Jedi, and people have said plenty, but there’s no denying that Johnson is a talented
director who has an exceptional eye for detail. That is why him writing and
directing a murder mystery with an ensemble cast featuring Chris Evans, Michael
Shannon, Daniel Craig, Christopher Plummer, Toni Collette, Jamie Lee Curtis,
and Lakeith Stanfield, how can that be anything but awesome?
20. Brightburn
What would the world be like if Superman turned out to
be evil? This horror film is going to give us a take on that outcome in what
looks to be one of the more unique horror films in recent memory. Not to
mention, Elizabeth Banks is also in this. That’s enough for me to buy a ticket.
19. Velvet Buzzsaw
Dan Gilroy and Jake Gyllenhaal reunite in what is
described as a comedy, crime, horror flick which will also star John Malkovich
and Toni Collette. The cast alone would be enough for me to get excited, but
also knowing that this is the reunion of Gilroy and Gyllenhaal after their phenomenal
partnership in the epic crime thriller Nightcrawler
is just icing on the cake.
18. Men in Black: International
The trailer has finally dropped, and this looks like
an absolute joyride. Liam Neeson, Chris Hemsworth, and Tessa Thompson are all
set to star in this new adaptation on the classic Men in Black that we all loved
from back in the day and I for one am freaking excited to see this new take,
and to see Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth reunited after they displayed great
chemistry during Thor: Ragnarok. And speaking
of Tessa Thompson, dang, what a roll she’s been on. From Creed, Creed II, Annihilation, Sorry to Bother You, and the aforementioned Thor: Ragnarok, she has stamped her name on the acting scene and
has become a must-see actress. Superstardom fits her well.
17. The New Mutants
If Deapool
has taught us anything, it’s that cutting away from the norm of superhero films
can sometimes be a breath of fresh air. That’s pretty much what I’m looking forward
to here when Anya Taylor-Joy and Maisie Williams lead a young cast of new
mutants (get it?) in a darker, more horror-style X-Men tale. Sounds
interesting.
16. The Lion King
I have always loved The Lion King. It has long been my favorite Disney film and one
that holds a special place in my heart. I cried during that scene (you know)
when I was a child, and I still shed a tear to this day. Now, I’m always skeptical
of live-action remakes, but when your cast includes Daniel Glover, Beyoncé,
Chiwetel Ejiofor, Seth Rogan, Billy Eichner, and the return of freaking James Earl
Jones? Not to mention it’s directed by Jon Favreau. This all seems like a recipe
for a good movie.
15. Ford v. Ferrari
James Mangold moves on from his take on Wolverine to
give us this biopic starring Christian Bale, and Matt Damon, and it will focus
on the battle between Ford and Ferrari to win Le Mans in 1966. I’m a sucker for
biopics. I love Christian Bale. I think James Mangold is a good director. That’s
pretty much all I needed to be excited.
14. It: Chapter Two
Yes. Yes. All of the yes to how they have cast this
sequel. James McAvoy, Jessica Chastain, Bill freaking Hader?! It’s time to
return to Derry, Maine. It’s time to once again face our fears of clowns. It’s
time to witness the conclusion to one of Stephen King’s greatest masterpieces.
I don’t feel nothing more needs to be said. Just watch the first It and get excited for this sequel.
13. Little
Women
Greta Gerwig is back behind the director’s chair, and
she’s reuniting with Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet to give her own adaptation
on the novel of the same name. After seeing what these three individuals did
with Lady Bird, I have no doubt that
this will be a good film. Probably another Oscar contender when the year is up.
12. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
Who doesn’t like Mister Rogers? Tom Hanks will be
donning the iconic sweaters in this film based on the life of the wonderful
Fred Rogers. Marielle Heller will take the director’s chair on this, which is set
to be her biggest task to date. Tom Hanks is playing Mister Rogers. What’s
there not to be excited about?
11. Zombieland Too
We are finally getting a Zombieland sequel. It is about dang time. Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson,
Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin are all set to reprise their roles from the
first film, and they will be joined by Avan Jogia, Zoey Deutch, and Dan Aykroyd.
Not much is really known about this right now, but considering the original
cast is returning, and how awesome the first one was, I’m in.
10. Spider-Man: Far From Home
The friendly neighborhood wallcrawler is back on the
big screen! After the success of Homecoming,
there is set to be a lot of hype surrounding this one. We get to continue Peter
Parker’s journey, and considering Tom Holland is the best Spider-Man to date (I
said what I said), I have no doubt that this should be a fun ride. Not to
mention, Jake Gyllenhaal is my favorite actor, so you better believe I am
pumped to see him as Mysterio, who has long deserved a movie run. All of the hype.
9. Toy Story 4
Do we really need this sequel? Probably not. Did they
close the story well with Toy Story 3?
Yes. Am I still going to see this? Absolutely.
8. Captain Marvel
Captain Marvel is about to show up into the MCU and show
everyone why she is one of the most powerful characters to ever grace the pages
of a comic book. Brie Larson is set to take on the titular role and I could not
be more hyped for it. I think that she is a great casting, and as we’ve learned,
the MCU usually hits their mark for casting these heroes. The skrulls are
finally set to arrive, Samuel Jackson is there as a young Nick Fury, and Brie
Larson is about to kick some serious butt. Also, Jude Law is in this. He’ll be
a nice complementary piece to the star that will be Brie Larson. Marvel is
about to get even more awesome.
7. John Wick: Chapter 3
John
Wick?
Awesome. John Wick: Chapter 2?
Awesome. That’s all you really need to know to be hyped for this. Keanu Reeves
is about to return with a vengeance after being ostracized by the assassin community,
and I can’t wait to see him kicking some more ass. The John Wick franchise
sports some of the best direction for action films since, like, ever. Also,
Halle Berry is joining him. So that’s pretty cool.
6. The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part
I was never really expecting much from the first Lego
movie. I bought it on a whim one black Friday for about 4 dollars and I watched
it the next day. Then I watched it like ten more times. It ended up being so
much more enjoyable than I ever could’ve imagined. Every actor that lent their
voice to this franchise has done a great job and I look forward to seeing the journey
continue for “the special”.
5. Glass
Ever since the ending of Split I’ve been ready for this. David Dunn, Mr. Glass, all 24
personalities of James McAvoy? They’re all returning for this thrilling
conclusion to what I believe is Shyamalan’s best work. Not to mention this also
has Sarah Paulson who is a national treasure. I can’t wait.
4. Joker
I know the Joker character has been done many times
before, and I know that nobody will ever top Mark Hamill’s iconic voice, and I
know that every live interpretation will always be judged by the standard of
Heath Ledger and will thus be criticized unfairly, but after seeing his
performances in movies such as You Were Never
Really Here, I can’t help but be excited for this. I love the character. I
love the actor. The few clips I’ve seen have me wanting to see more. That’s
pretty much it.
3. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
Quentin Tarantino has never let me down as a director,
and I don’t expect him to start now with a story like this one and the cast that
he has at his disposal. Not to mention this is rumored to be his swan song, so
I’m sure he’s looking to go out with a bang. But seriously, listen to this cast.
Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Kurt Russell, Al Pacino, and
Dakota Fanning? That’s a lot of talent to along with one of my all-time
favorite directors.
2. Star Wars: Episode IX
I’m a sucker for Star Wars. It is my second favorite
franchise to ever exist. I love this new trilogy and I think that it keeps
getting better as we learn more about these new characters. There’s such depth
to them and every time they peel back another layer you learn more and
understand more of why they are the way that they are. I can’t wait to see this
trilogy concluded with J.J. Abrams back in the director’s chair.
1. Avengers: Endgame
