Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope
Star Wars is a legendary franchise, and A New Hope was the perfect beginning to what goes down as the greatest space-opera of all time. George Lucas crafted a film from an incredible vision that he had, and it is absolutely phenomenal. Reviewing this film is going to be difficult for me without gushing over it because this is my favorite franchise of all time and this entry hits on all cylinders. Every actor is perfectly cast, the pace and story are incredible, and the dialogue is both witty and triumphantly hopeful. This is the beginning to something that is still going on all these years later. If you are a fan of any of the Star Wars films or shows, you should go back and watch this film to see where it all began.
By
now, we should all know how the story goes. A long time ago in a galaxy far far
away, yadda yadda, but right from the opening sequence you can tell that this
story is going to be good. You start off on a spaceship having just read that
some blueprints have been retrieved and are being sent off to some guy named
Obi-Wan Kenobi by two adorably annoying droids in hopes that it will help the
rebel alliance defeat the dark and sinister empire. Just from that alone you
know that the movie is going to be intense. You are thrust into the middle of a
civil war between some scrappy rebels and an empire that has every single
advantage that they could possibly have, including the Death Star, which is the
largest and most destructive spacecraft capable of obliterating a planet. After that it is about an hour of meeting some
of the best characters ever written. Mark Hamill is great as Luke Skywalker and
Harrison Ford might be even better as Han Solo. They make a perfect pairing.
One is an optimistic believer in the Force while the other is a sarcastic and
cynical smuggler who is great with his zings. He also has the coolest named
spaceship in history, the Millennium Falcon. You also have the wise mythical character,
Obi-Wan Kenobi, played brilliantly by Alec Guinness, not to mention the late Carrie
Fisher as the lovely Princess Leia. Honestly, all of these characters are
great, but they pale in comparison to the introduction, presentation, and overall
incredibleness of Darth Vader. He is the perfect villain. He is dark, menacing,
powerful, and when he wields that red lightsaber, he is just incredibly intimidating.
The moment he enters the room, you feel his presence. You hear the breathing,
you hear the imperial march theme, you see that dark helmet which every person wanted
to own at some point, and you know that you have a phenomenal character that is
always ranked towards the top of every top villain list.
