Chef
Why am I reviewing Chef this time of year? I will be honest, I spent majority of my time today cooking and forgot to do a review so here I am late at night reviewing Chef because I have had food on my mind all day. That being said, this is actually a really good film that has several good messages and gives you that nice warm feeling by the end of it. This whole film is basically the brainchild of Jon Favreau who not only stars in it, but also produced, wrote, and directed it, and you can see exactly how much it meant to him based on the quality of the film in general. There is very little to dislike about it. It is just one of those feelgood films that you watch whenever you want to just enjoy yourself. However, be warned, do not watch this film on an empty stomach.
For
starters, the acting and writing throughout the film is definitely quality. I
mean, it is not the best performance by any of these actors, but it is definitely
a good performance by everyone involved. While Jon Favreau is the primary
protagonist, I found myself most interested in John Leguizamo. His character is
just a lot of fun and watching his friendship with Jon Favreau’s character was good.
Even Robert Downey Jr. makes a cameo in this. This is almost like watching Iron
Man, but if you replace all of the superhero elements with cooking, and
there is a lot of cooking. The cinematography on the cooking sequences is some
of the best I have ever seen. Every single dish looks amazingly delicious and
it is most impressive that Favreau actually prepared every dish himself. His
knife cutting skills are superb. What Favreau does here is possibly the most
impressive thing I have ever seen considering he learned the techniques,
directed, produce, wrote, and starred in this. I do not think that I have ever
seen anyone do more to have their vision come to light, except for maybe Tommy Wiseau
in The Room. The film itself has a solid story and a good pace. It
progresses well and never feels boring or full of unnecessary moments. Every
sequence sets up the next in a way that makes sense.
