What If
This is easily my favorite romantic comedy ever. It is one of the best romantic comedies ever made. This is a romcom that is not just good as a film of its genre, but it is good as a film in general. Michael Dowse does a wonderful job crafting a very laid back romcom that has a ton of heart and a bunch of laughs while also being paced extraordinarily well and looking fantastic. There are several things that drive this film, and I am going to list every single great aspect of it because I love it so much.
First
and foremost, the best part of this film are the performances of Daniel
Radcliffe, Zoe Kazan, Adam Driver, and Mackenzie Davis. As a pair of friends,
they all have fantastic chemistry with each other. The dialogue just flows so
effortlessly between them and it comes across as just friends having a conversation
rather than watching actors perform in a film. The friendship between Radcliffe
and Driver’s characters is simply awesome. It reminds me a lot of my friendship
between me and my best friend which is probably why it resonated with me the
way that it did. They play their parts as bickering friends to perfection and
it really helps out the flow of the film. Likewise, Driver and Davis also have
fantastic chemistry despite having very little screen time together. They definitely
maximize the time that they are given. That brings us to the driving force of
the film, the chemistry between Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan. Those two just
absolutely nail their performances and their chemistry is simply phenomenal. There
is not a single scene between the two of them that I was not fully engaged in
because you can just feel the emotion and tension. I hope that they work
together again because they killed it in this film.
While
the performances were great, it helped that they had a fantastic screenplay to
work with thanks to Elan Mastai. The dialogue just feels so natural that it is
really just like watching a bunch of friends hanging out. I am a big fan of
romcoms that do not have unnecessary lines that are ultimately super cheesy.
The screenplay is also what helps out the pace of the film. There is not really
a moment that feels dull because they conversations just flow, and the actions
follow. What I love about this film is just how natural it feels. That feel is
what makes it so rewatchable. I have seen this film several times and every
time I watch it, I am engaged and focused because it is just so good and fun.
