The Disaster Artist
Funny, touching, and an absolute joy to watch for any aspiring filmmaker. The Disaster Artist succeeds in all the aspects that it is trying to succeed in, and it is a triumph for James Franco. It is a comedy that at its core shows very real emotions from the central characters, especially James Franco as Tommy Wiseau. James Franco’s performance is mesmerizing here. This is the best performance that he has ever given, as he steps into the rare shoes of an actor who no longer appears as an actor playing a role, he simply becomes Tommy Wiseau. Yes, Franco has given some great performances in the past, but here, he is equal parts hilarious, raw, touching, and charismatic. The raw emotion that he captures gives a glimpse into who Tommy Wiseau is as a person, and it shows what drives him to not only create The Room, but also what possesses him to release it despite the negativity that was experienced on set. Dave Franco also gives a solid performance as Greg Sestero. He has a great connection with his brother here, and it is obvious throughout the film, but it is never more evident than during the third act. The performances that they both give during the third act are beautiful to watch, and you begin to feel every bit of tension between the two.
In
case you have not heard of the story of The Room, it is widely
recognized as the absolute best worst movie ever made, and The Disaster
Artist follows the making of that movie. It starts off in an improv class
where Tommy Wiseau meets Greg Sestero, and thus begins not only their friendship,
but their journey to try to make it as actors in Hollywood. As one would
imagine, it is not as easy as they anticipate and they have a hard time making
it in the business, particularly Wiseau, who wants to play a hero and gets told
by one instructor that he is more suited as a villain due to his malevolent
look. After constant failures, and a major critique from a director, Wiseau
decides that he and Sestero should just make their own film, and that begins
their journey into the making of The Room. That journey proved to be
especially good for us because it resulted in not just one, but two absolutely
great films, each hilarious for its own reasons.
