Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping

As far as mockumentaries go, this might be my favorite film mockumentary ever, and quite possibly my favorite Andy Samberg performance, which is saying a lot because of how good he is in Hotrod. Of course, I am talking about the criminally underrated Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. This film is not only a lot of fun and incredibly hilarious, but it is creative, full of heart, and features the great trio, The Lonely Island, as well as more cameos than you could possibly imagine. I am talking Akon, Rihanna, Mariah Carey, Simon Cowell, freaking Seal! I mean just based off of that information alone, how do you not want to at least take a look at the trailer?

This film revolves around The Lonely Island playing fictional music group The Style Boyz, with Andy Samberg being the frontman of the group as Kid Conner. The film is shot as a musical documentary much in the style of Behind the Music. The Style Boyz are a popular group that grew up together, but as is often the case with these, the attention grows for Andy Samberg’s character, Conner, and he decides to branch out on his own, much to the disapproval of his longtime friend, Lawrence. The rest of the film revolves around Conner’s life and career after his split from The Style Boyz, which goes through many twists and turns. Now, I have to say, the music that was produced for this film is hilariously good. I am not joking, these are songs that you might even end up adding to your playlist, much like I have. What this film has going for it is the comedic masterclass that is put on by Andy Samberg, as well as the terrific script that was written by The Lonely Island themselves. The jokes are just incredible, and they hit every time. I have seen this film a number of times, and I have shown it to a few friends, and every time we all find ourselves laughing like crazy. Another great aspect of this film is the direction and production value. It legitimately looks like an actual documentary and that adds to the comedic value of it all.

This film is just excellently made, and I am truly confused at the fact that whenever I bring it up, people have not seen it, so if there is one thing that I want to accomplish with this review is for more people to watch what is one of Andy Samberg’s all-time performances. Two of the members of The Lonely Island actually also directed this, so this is essentially the brainchild of that trio, and if you have never seen The Lonely Island videos, try checking them out and that might get you in the mood to watch this. This is just a great comedy that I think more people should get their eyes on. It is excellently made, the jokes hit every time, and it is just a gorgeous film to look at. Official Rating: 4 Stars.
