The Nice Guys

Every so often you run into a film that is so insanely good, but absolutely flopped at the box office either due to lack of promotion, or people simply were not interested in the film. Sometimes, that film is so good and is set up perfectly for a sequel that you will unfortunately never see due to the film flopping. The Nice Guys is that type of film. This movie is amazing and generates so many authentic laughs. I remember buying it on a whim one black Friday because it was cheap, and it was one of the best purchases I have ever made. This film is mysterious, entertaining, hilarious, and just an absolute delight and features what is possibly Ryan Gosling’s best performance in a film.

This film was directed by Shane Black who was also responsible for directing a very similar film to this one titled Kiss Kiss Bang Bang which was also incredibly funny and featured a great cast, but I think that he has outdone himself with this one. The screenplay and the characters for this one are just so perfect. Ryan Gosling gets to play such a sleazy, down on his luck father who happens to be a terrible private investigator and he does it brilliantly. Meanwhile, Russell Crowe gets a chance to show his comedic chops with his character and he pulls it off well. The combination of them delivering the brilliantly written lines just carries this film to such high levels of comedy. The comedic timing on the film is some of the best I have ever seen. What is also great about this is that it is not just a comedy, it is also a mystery, so you get all of those great crime-solving elements, and great shootout scenes, and awesome car crash sequences, and it is all done in a bloody, but still hilarious way.

The thing that really makes this film pop, though, is the pairing of Gosling and Crowe. The two of them just work magic together. They are obviously helped by a brilliantly penned script, but the way they deliver the dialogue just has such a genuine and witty feel to it. They look like they are truly having fun onscreen and it is delightful to see. This is the part in the review where I talk about flaws, right? Well, I do not have any flaws with this film. It is a great dark comedy that is highly rewatchable and should be watched by everyone. What I will complain about is that we have not gotten a sequel for this and we more than likely will not get a sequel. That is truly a shame because these characters can easily make another run. Hopefully Shane Black can get something done and a studio can get another film done because original films like this that do not rely on any source material deserve to be rewarded when they are this good. Official Rating: 5 Stars.
